A snapshot of our journey through the years
2001
- The weekend after Dr Chris Leatt’s son starts riding motocross, Dr Leatt witnesses the death of fellow rider and friend Mr Alan Selby. Dr Leatt stops his son from riding starts working on a solution to reduce neck injuries.
2004
- Dr Leatt sells the first Leatt® neck brace in South Africa.
2005
- Leatt® Company established.
2006
- BMW and Leatt develop a new test method for measuring neck forces on an unrestrained torso. Existing test methods at that time was for restrained torsos (car seat with belts).
- First neck braces sold in the USA.
2007
- The Leatt® neck brace on the cover of Racer X magazine and is awarded Product of the Year; Paralysed US Motocross 2007 Champion David Bailey releases a video encouraging the use of the Leatt® neck braces for all riders. Demand for the product spikes.
2008
- World renowned Leatt® Lab founded.
2009
- Leatt® Neck Brace received 5 awards from various global Moto and MTB print and digital media publications.
2010
- Leatt® chest protection range and first MTB specific neck brace is introduced.
2011
- Body protection range and the first Leatt® Moto Jackets are released.
2012
- Using 3DF impact foam, Leatt introduces the first soft-shell body protector and a range of elbow and knee guards.
2013
- Leatt® reveals the Fusion 2.0 Junior, a product that offers upper-body and neck protection all in one specifically for children. Body protect range increases.
2014
- The company releases the C-Frame Knee Brace designed for use on off-road motorbikes, also the all new 6.5 and 5.5 neck braces are introduced.
2015
- Leatt® introduces their first Moto and MTB helmets along with CE impact tested gloves using impact gel.
2016
- Leatt® broadens their apparel line with the addition of full riding gear for Moto and MTB.
2017
- The X-Frame knee brace and all new 3.5 Neck Braces are introduced.
2018
- Leatt® enters the goggle market with the revolutionary Bulletproof Velocity goggle range.
2019
- Leatt®becomes a Moto head to toe brand as the long awaited Leatt® 5.5 FlexLock boot is introduced following 3 years of development.
2020
- A range of flat and clipless shoes are released specifically for use in MTB meaning bicycle is now also head to toe.
2021
- The 2nd generation of Moto and MTB full face helmets are revealed using Leatt®’s industry leading 360 Turbine Technology.
2022
- 2022 Powersports Business Nifty 50 Award: In 2022, the Leatt 8.5 Moto Helmet Kit was awarded the Nifty 50 Award by the editors of Powersports Business, an industry publication that selects aftermarket products and services that they believe will help boost dealer profitability. To be eligible for the 2022 award, products had to be new or substantially improved from previous years and be ready for delivery in calendar year 2022.
2023
- Design & Innovation 2023 Awards: The Mono Suit MTB HydraDriTM 5.0 won a Design and Innovation Award for 2023. The Design & Innovation jury of bicycle industry experts seeks to recognize bicycles and bicycle products.
- Design & Innovation 2023 Awards: The Leatt MTB 3.0 Enduro helmet won a Design and Innovation Award for 2023. The Design & Innovation jury of bicycle industry experts seeks to recognize bicycles and bicycle products.
2024
- Design & Innovation 2024 Awards: The Leatt All-Mtn 5.0 Jersey won a Design and Innovation Award for 2024. The Design & Innovation jury of bicycle industry experts seeks to recognize bicycles and bicycle products.
