What is 360° Turbine Technology?

Using our vast experience and high-tech testing facilities, we created our own system in the Leatt lab to help reduce the risk of sustaining serious head and brain injuries in a crash. All Leatt helmets feature our category-defining 360° Turbine Technology.

Why we built it

Most helmets on the market are designed and tested to handle big, high-speed hits. But research shows it's often the smaller, low-speed knocks — the kind that happen in everyday crashes — that add up over time and are strongly linked to concussion risk. Standard foam liners, especially in today's slimmer helmet designs, are built stiff enough to pass high-speed tests, which means they don't flex much for the lower-speed impacts riders are actually most likely to experience. That gap is exactly what 360° Turbine Technology was designed to close.

What does it do?

Our 360° Turbine Technology not only mitigates rotational acceleration, but also low-velocity linear acceleration that has been shown, if repeated, to have cumulative effects on the frequency and severity of concussion and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). In short, this brain injury reduction technology significantly reduces the risk of sustaining serious head and brain injuries during a crash.

Rotational impacts deserve special mention: when a hit causes the head to twist rather than just move in a straight line, the brain can rotate slightly inside the skull. That twisting motion is a major contributor to concussion and more serious brain injuries, which is why reducing rotational force — not just cushioning a straight-on blow — is such a key part of the design.

How does it work?

Disc-shaped turbines made of Armourgel, a non-Newtonian polymer that can absorb energy, are strategically placed all along the inside of the helmet’s EPS liner. So, when you put the helmet on, they are positioned directly against the skull. 

In a crash, these turbines deform and bend, reducing rotational impact forces and absorbing energy from the impact. This technology can absorb both low-velocity linear and rotational impact forces in a crash.

Backed by the lab

360° Turbine Technology was developed by Leatt's own Biomedical Engineering R&D team — led by Dr. Chris Leatt — and validated through independent lab testing rather than just design theory. Using dedicated impact-testing rigs, the team measured how much the Turbines reduced head acceleration compared to identical helmets without them. The results: meaningful reductions in rotational force on angled impacts, and reductions of up to a quarter in low-speed head acceleration — precisely the kind of everyday knock that standard foam alone struggles with.
